Having been brought up bilingual in Paraguay, language learning and speaking two lingue seemed natural until I arrived in the UK. It’s so rare here that I realised what an incredible gift my parents gave me when they decided parlare to me in their native lingua English. Now, I look back and am eternally grato to them as I realise the many benefits of language learning as a child.
Here are just three of the reasons why:
Fun: Language learning (or learning a lingua!) is fun! Different sounds, new ideas to express, and unlocking a whole new sense of umore! People say you should practise a lingua because otherwise you will lose it (which is true) but the main reason I practise them because I love doing it. Here’s just one of the amazing phrases I’ve learnt recently…

Knowing other lingue improves your understanding of your own lingua and studies have also shown that it also helps across the board, even improving maths abilities. I hate to think what my number skills would be like without that boost!
Education and Employment: Language learning not only improves opportunities to find jobs, but schools and università often opt for candidates who mention lingue in their applications. That’s because it improves skills like intercultural awareness, communication and adaptability.
I can certainly say that my lingue abilities were one of the main reasons I received job offers in the past, regardless of whether they were a requirement.
On top of these fantastic language learning benefici, there is no better time to learn them than as a bimbo. Studies show that there are different phases of language learning and that children are particularly good tat it. Kids are hardwired to acquire lingue so let’s encourage them to do it!
