Engage your child with language learning through autumn fun!
As the leaves change color and the air turns crisp, fall brings with it a world of new sights, smells, and activities—making it the perfect season to introduce your child to new words in a different language! At One Third Stories, we believe that language learning should be fun, interactive, and a part of everyday life. In this post, we’ll share exciting indoor and outdoor activities to help your child practice fall-themed words, while also enjoying the beauty of the season.
We’re also offering free downloadable resources, including a printable activity sheet with autumn vocabulary and an accompanying audio file to reinforce pronunciation. Whether you’re enjoying the great outdoors or spending a cozy afternoon indoors, these activities will help your child embrace fall—and language learning!
Outdoor Fall Activities for Language Learning
1. Leaf Hunt and Word Match
Head to the park or your backyard with your child and search for different types of leaves. Once you’ve collected a handful, sit down and review their colors, shapes, and textures. You can label the leaves in the new language—encouraging your child to say words like “leaf,” “tree,” “yellow,” “red,” and “orange” in the target language.
2. Nature Walk with New Words
Take your child on a nature walk, where they can experience the full essence of autumn—crunching leaves underfoot, smelling the earthy scent of fall, and feeling the cool breeze. Along the way, introduce them to fall-related vocabulary. Words like “leaves,” “tree,” and “rain” are perfect for describing what you’ll see. You can practice these words as you walk and later revisit them at home with our free printable and audio.
To keep it fun, try a scavenger hunt! Create a list (with the help of the printable) of items you might see on your walk and encourage your child to find and say them in the new language.
3. Pumpkin Patch Language Game
If you plan to visit a pumpkin patch, turn it into a language-learning adventure! As you explore, introduce your child to the word for “pumpkin” in the new language, adjectives like “small” and “orange. You could even play a guessing game: describe a pumpkin, and have your child find the one you’re describing.
This fun activity not only builds vocabulary but also makes language learning part of your fall family traditions.
Indoor Fall Activities for Language Learning
1. Cozy Story Time with Autumn Words
When the weather keeps you indoors, grab some blankets and get cozy with your child for story time. You can read a book featuring autumn themes and integrate new vocabulary from the printable sheet into your storytelling. Make use of the audio file to ensure correct pronunciation as you point out keywords in the story. You can also encourage your child to point to pictures of fallen objects in the book and say their names in the new language.
For a more immersive experience, check out One Third Stories’ language-based storybooks that weave the new language into the narrative in a way that feels natural and fun for young learners.
2. Autumn Art with New Words
Set up an art station at home where your child can create their own autumn-inspired artwork—like leaf rubbings, pumpkin drawings, or acorn crafts. As they create, encourage them to use new vocabulary related to their artwork. For example, if they’re drawing a tree, ask them to say “leaf” in the new language and describe the colors they are using.
Display the finished artwork along with labels in the new language, making it a visual and interactive way to reinforce the words.
3. Fall-Themed Simon Says
For a fun and active indoor game, adapt “Simon Says” and other movement games using fall vocabulary. You could say things like, “Simon says jump like a squirrel,” or “Simon says pick up a red leaf.” Use the printable and audio file to incorporate even more autumn words, and challenge your child to follow along. This is a great way to get your child moving and learning at the same time!
Making Language Learning Part of Your Routine
The beauty of these activities is that they blend seamlessly into your daily life. You don’t need to set aside special study time—language learning happens naturally when it’s integrated into the activities your child already loves. Whether you’re exploring the outdoors or crafting indoors, the key is repetition and making the new language feel like a part of your family’s everyday routine.
And don’t forget to download our free printable activity sheet and audio file to make language learning even easier. The printable includes a collection of autumn-themed words, while the audio helps your child hear and practice proper pronunciation.
By combining hands-on activities with our resources, you’ll help your child build a strong foundation in a new language—while also creating beautiful fall memories.
